One by One
One by one, waves curl
and crash into the shore
blurring the lines, revealing signs
of a twisting, turning tide
about to shift, giving a lift
to all those adrift
and broken deep inside
One by one, stars shine,
sparkling the dark
So far out there, pinned in thin air, keeping secrets of midnight
All through the ages,
seekers and sages
meek and courageous
drink down the light
One by one, hearts beat,
drumming up rhythm
Inspiring wonder, pieces of thunder rumble without rest
In syncopation, a great vibration,
an endless pulsation
of Life itself expressed
One by one, words rise
and fall into lines
that tell a tale, when peace prevailed, waving war aside
it swept o’er the land,
every woman, child, and man
graciously shaking hands,
a call to arms open wide
One by one, we each stand up
for what is right
once and for all, answer the call
to move toward the Light
holding our ground,
we never back down
turn it all back around,
one by one we unite

The Glory
Mine eyes have seen the glory
of the coming of the Light
It crept up on darkness
and overturned the night
Rose up at dawn
blazing everything in sight…
All of creation sparkling in pure light

The Poet
The Poet spoke out loud
gathering a crowd
in the center of the square
we circled round
The poet gave us cause
to put the day on pause
To have a sip
of something so profound
The poet seared the air
in verses clear and spare
he told the Truth
like I had never heard
He woke me from a daze
with the turn of every phrase
Humbly I hung on every word
He was calling, calling,
calling the weary home
The poet struck a chord
His voice took wing and soared
a sense of wonder deepened
as I listened
On a mission to impart
he knew the lines by heart every single syllable glistened
He went on to recite
til stars avowed it night
When he spoke his last
he simply disappeared
His only claim to fame
no one knew his name
his words remain Music to my ears
He was calling, calling,
calling the weary home.
A Moment of Your Time

the other day?
I was minding my own business walking down the avenue
when a frightening bolt of lightning struck out of the blue
There was a deafening silence,
just before that unmistakable
crispy sound of the sky
getting ripped in two.

In the distance thunder grumbled
I stood humbled as it tumbled
and rumbled through me
It knocked me to my knees,
it shook me to the core
I was overcome by undertones
of a subsonic roar
It put a tremble into every single thing
It set off car alarms
it made church bells ring
Thousands of bright white doves
took off from the steeples
and tore across
the darkened twilight sky
Flying in formation of what appeared as letters
Delivering a message from above

Thanksgiving
I can’t believe all the noise
in this two bit, neon lit,
greasy spoon diner
I have no idea,
how am I supposed to think?

I stare at my goofy reflection
in the luke warm puddle
in the bottomof my bottomless
coffee cup, quietly estimating
I’ve had my share to drink.
Two dollars down pays my way
out the door
It’s threatening rain though

on my face with the trickle of a tear

my old neighborhood
Wondering if I was as missed
as I am misunderstood
though I have to admit just
what I’m up to isn’t always clear
Caution on the street is so pervasive, every evening newscast
slightly more abrasive
It’s little wonder angels
are all the rage
though they’ve been hanging around before Adam and Eve
nowadays people need something
to believe
in the face of all the hype
the world is in its final stage
Way up above a sonic boom BLASTS across the sky
An invisible barrier busted as thunder rains down.
High technology ringing through, strong enough to tear the wind in two
and send it in directions
it wouldn’t naturally be found
Some guy down the corner
flashing back to Viet Nam
The change that I can spare
is nestled in his palm he says, “Thanks. God be with you”
I reply, ”God be with you, too”
Ah, what the hell, God be with us all!
Mean ol’ Mr. Winter
is pushing back the fall
and sometimes surviving it
is the best that we can do
A little while back,
just around Thanksgiving
I started singing “Alleluia”
for the simple joy of living
I could not be more grateful
where I stand

Roads to the Romans
I come out of the forest into town
by way of the tracks
the Romans laid down
I’ve not been in hiding

The Visit
Right before my very eyes,
an angel fell from the skies
He took me by surprise
I almost forgot how to breathe
I could not believe
this was happening to me
He picked himself up off the ground
brushed off his wings,
took a look around
that’s when his eyes found mine
Man, did they ever shine
I felt a lingering tingle dancing
up and down my spine
A warm, white, liquid light
poured through my mind
It calmed all my fears so I drew nearer
I asked him “Why are you here?”
He hung his holy, haloed head
and mumbled
“I am humbled for I have stumbled
and fallen from grace
now I can not see God’s face”
I didn’t know quite what to do
I stepped back to think it through …
I wanted to give him a hug
I wanted to get him some drugs
I wanted to distract him
with mind-bending questions
on the apparent circularity of God,
but that suddenly seemed selfish
on my part
I wanted to tell him a joke,
instead I just spoke
from my heart…
”What can I do for you?”
His eyes opened wide
with the wonder of a child
his sad face was erased
by a radiant smile….
he leaned in close and whispered,
"you just did
all that needed to be done…
You see…
I’ve been losing my faith
in Humankind
caring and compassion
are getting harder to find
all the foolish misbehaving,
all the children that need saving
it makes an angel wonder …
what the hell is going on down here?
However…if the first person I meet after descending
all the way from heaven,
doesn’t know me from Adam yet offers me comfort
and keeps me from feeling alone
I’m going to turn around
and go right back home
There’s so much work to be done
So many songs to be sung
Oh, I thank you
for this amazing revelation
and your kind consideration
Your simple words
will keep my hope alive
He began to rise

as he climbed into the skies
