Beautiful Days
There ain’t no two ways about it
These are beautiful days
Sometimes I just want to shout it out
“Wake up! Shake off the haze!”
Take a good look around you
There’s beauty everywhere
You might have to go
below the surface
But I swear to you it’s there
Headlines are haunting
the forecast is grim
predictions are daunting
the light’s going dim
There ain’t no two ways about it
These are the times of our lives
Take the best Leave the rest
See how your energy thrives
In the face of the hopeless
Let the hope you have shine
Don’t feel bad about feeling good
See it as a welcome sign
Headlines are haunting
the forecast is grim
predictions are daunting
the light’s going dim
There ain’t no two ways about it
These are beautiful days
The way the sun keeps showing up
is worthy of high praise
When you get right down to it
The choice is up to you
Whether your day is silver or grey
Depends on your point of view
Don’t dare ever doubt it
These are beautiful days
The Murmur
It was just a murmur
when it hit the air
It spread like wildfire
on a burning tear.
Merely a murmur
barely understood.
Just a couple of words changed everything for good.
Once it was spoken
it couldn’t be taken back.
The silence was broken
the status quo was cracked
Words have power.
Words change minds
They can send a man straight to hell
or give eyesight to the blind
Nothing more than a mumble
time suddenly stopped.
Heads turned ears burned
and jaws systematically dropped
Merely a murmur
whispered down the line
Gets contorted distorted misreported every single time
It’s all grist for the mill
once it’s out of the vault.
When you’re served up a dish
take it with a grain of salt
Words have power
Words change minds
they can send a man straight to hell
or give eyesight to the blind
Here’s a word to the wise now
when you’re up in the mix
If rumors abound turn around
and get out of there quick
Whoever you are
whatever you do
Watch what you say
and who you’re listening to
Watch what you say
and who you’re listening to.
Who you listening to?
Line In The Sand
On the horizon of a peaceful land
Stood the one deemed in command
A glistening sword the upper hand
Decisively he drew a line in the sand
He scratched the surface
of a perfect place
Unapologetically leaving his trace
What once was one, broken in two.
All the people cried out,
“What did you do?”
A wave of a hand, a nation divided.
All across the land
everyone was either sided.
All along the line, conflict arose.
All along the line, forces opposed.
A mark in the dirt
like a scar on a bone
the line took on a life of its own
The people bowed their heads
and prayed for resolve.
“Grain by grain
May the line in the sand dissolve”
On the horizon a breathtaking wind
Causing a stir, circling in
With invisible force,
the air was cleared.
A gust in the dust,
the line in the sand disappeared.
Upon the highest mountain
facing east
the wind delivered
a symbol of peace.
Far above the sand
in the sunlight it shone.
Wings of a dove carved in stone.
Your Love Is Like A Song
Oh, my beloved my beautiful one
Your love is like the ocean,
a constant forward motion,
giving endlessly
it flows from deep inside,
rises with the tide
washes over me.
Your love is like the wind,
it rushes in and I begin to spin
and whirl and twirl around.
It shakes me to the core,
takes my heart by storm,
always knows no bounds.
Your love is like the wind.
Oh, my beloved my beautiful one.
Your love is like the sunlight
silently it burns bright,
colors all my days.
As the sky goes dark,
your eyes glow with a spark
that sets my heart ablaze.
Your love is like a song,
it echoes strong for so long
I have longed to hear it.
It surges to a symphony
knocks me down upon my knees
raises up my weary spirit
your love is like a song
your love is like a song
Surrender to Love
I saw Jesus sitting by the curbside
holding his head in his hands
he was struggling to understand.
“What’s so hard about loving one another?
What’s so hard about caring for each other?
Why are so many of my sisters and brothers straying away from the Light?
Man, something is just not right.
When all of Humanity
makes a plea for sanity.
It’s time to take a long, hard look
it’s time to rewrite the book.
Surrender to love. You will rise above.
Love is the reason we are here
Listen to me please
I am down upon my knees
Surrender to love
I see so many lives being shattered.
I see a whole lot of souls in tatters.
Love is the only thing
that ever really matters
when you cut it
right down to the bone
Nobody wants to be alone
Jesus walked up to a homeless man.
Broke some bread into his hand
he said,
“Thanks brother, that’s mighty kind
but I was kind of hoping for some
of that fine divine wine”
Jesus shook his head in disbelief.
Threw up his hands and
said “Good grief.
I had no idea things were this bad.
What the hell am I
going to tell my dad?
This whole wide world
is a God damn mess
I’ll have to come back later I guess.”
He headed for his pick-up truck
thunder roared as he revved it up
and pulled onto the Most High way
I swear to God I heard him say,
“Surrender to love. You will rise above.
Love is the reason we are here.
Listen to me please
I am down upon my knees
Surrender to love”
Wicked Wind
There's a wild wicked wind
sweeping across the land
it’s out of the blue
it’s way out of hand
a storm of raging air
a twirling tempest unfurled
it’s gathering steam
as it circles the world
it goes just where it wills
at every twist and turn
it bends all the rules
makes wildfires burn
a million raving phantoms.
on the prowl.
sounds like the hounds of hell’s unholy howl
There’s a clamor in the sky
it’s the blare of Gabriel’s horn
It’s a blast from the future
Blowing through to forewarn
Get the hatches battened down
Tether whatever may stray
It’ll shiver your timbers.
It’ll blow you away
a million raving phantoms
on the prowl.
sounds like the hounds of hell’s unholy howl
it’s striking at the shore
at its own command
with all that we have
we have to withstand
‘til it runs out of breath
has nowhere to land
this wild wicked wind
has no mercy for man.
this wild wicked wind
has no mercy for man
Where Were You?
Where were you
when the stunning headlines broke?
Did you think it was a joke?
Did you hope that they misspoke though it was true?
Where were you
as it all went up in smoke?
Were you speechless? Did you choke?
The whole wide world awoke
and we all knew
Where were you?
Did you close your eyes?
Were your fears realized?
Were you humbled? Did you plead?
Were you in despair?
Did you say a prayer
for all of those in need?
Where were you
as the earth began to quake?
Did you find it hard to take?
Did you tremble in its wake? I did too
Where were you
as the sea began to surge?
A tidal wave emerged
it redefined the verge
and busted through
Where were you?
Did you close your eyes?
Were your fears realized?
Were you humbled? Did you plead?
Were you in despair?
Did you say a prayer
for all of those in need?
Where were you
on the day of reckoning?
Did you hear the church bells ring?
Did a choir of sirens sing?
Did you feel your life changing?
Did your heart suddenly sting?
Did you question everything
you ever knew?
Where were you?
Did you close your eyes?
Were your fears realized?
Were you humbled? Did you plead?
Were you in despair?
Did you say a prayer
for all of those in need?
I Know a Man
I know a man he’s one of a kind.
He holds some distinction
when it comes to his mind.
His heart was on fire
he had vision for days.
He burned with desire to be on his way.
He went far from home
and all that he knew
Seeking the wisdom reserved for a few.
I know a man he climbed oh so high
searching for answers
at the top of the sky
His balance got lost he fell oh so far
busted his heart has an invisible scar
he went down down down down down for the count
I know a man he slipped off the tracks.
He started thinking that drinking
was the surest way back.
He was dead wrong
it made everything worse
he could not get out from
under the curse
He held himself down
he beat himself up.
Drowning his sorrows and
clinking his cup.
I know a man he was broken and spent
he had no idea the extent that he went.
Down down down down down
for the count
Down down down down down
but not out
Once at the bottom he had to choose
His whole life to live or
his whole life to lose
He took the high road
though he barely escaped.
Beleaguered and weary
his soul bumped and scraped
it was a long walk back
a tough row to hoe
to find his own version
of the straight and narrow.
I’m so glad he woke up
to the cause for alarm.
Before he had done irreparable harm
he saved his own life he got away clean
that’s a relative term
if you get what I mean
I know a man now you know him too.
He just finished singing this song to you
The Breeze
We stood so still in the forest
listening to the song of the breeze
through the leaves in the trees.
The air was so clear and crisp
and full of promise
Love shined in your deep
dark diamond eyes.
Once again you took
my breath away
I was never more alive than
I was with you that day.
I was captured enraptured
by your touch
There, in that breathing cathedral
We were lost in our embrace.
Our hearts beat wild
overcome with joy
for having found one another
sunlight splashed down
painting a halo
around your heavenly face.
How much beauty
can a man withstand?
Before he simply falls
upon his knees
on fire inspired by
the vision that he sees
through tearful eyes
I gazed up at you. You…
In a moment of perfect silence,
it rang so clear to me.
Beyond being my passion you are my truth my hope my life
as I beheld you speechless
the song of the breeze
through the leaves in the trees became your name.
How much love am I
supposed to bear?
Before I have to climb
a mountain high.
Cry out into the night
until I fill the empty sky
my heart in flames
singing on the dawn
Said and Done
When all is said and done
the fire dies to ember
The distance you have come
you no longer remember
I have a memory, a perfect lullaby.
Angel voice, angel eyes
When all is said and done
silence is descending
Sunset has begun
the impending, bitter ending
I have a memory,
reaching for your hand.
A loving touch for your little man.
When all is said and done
you face the final curtain.
May I please be the one
to sing you what I’m certain?
You leave a legacy of virtue and grace
Every breath deep in faith.
Your journey is over
There’s nowhere left to roam
Close your eyes
Go home.
Tried and True
Once again upon my knees
looking up and asking
“Please help me on my way”
I want to be a better man.
I want to do the best I can
I want to make the most of every day.
I look to you. I look to you
I see the light of love shine through.
I look to you I look to you
an endless blessing tried and true
The world is turning dark and cold
souls are being bought and sold
everybody deals with what they’re dealt
the stakes are high the plot runs deep
faith is getting tough to keep.
Forever I’ll remember how I felt
as I gazed into your eyes
reflecting imminent sunrise,
the frost around my heart
began to melt.
I look to you. I look to you.
I see the light of love shine through.
I look to you I look to you
an endless blessing tried and true
This trusty old guitar of mine
with patient strings that I entwine
to find the always moving melody
Music is its own reward
my voice and a fistful of chords
are all I need to set my spirit free
a serenade my whole life long
I live to deliver my song
it’s who I am and who I’m meant to be
I look to you. I look to you.
I see the light of love shine through.
I look to you I look to you
an endless blessing tried and true
Flock of Birds
I saw a flock of birds decorate the sky. I watched as they flew into
the corner of my eye
then descended down
as if to touch the ground
with a single flap of their wings
they turned themselves around and took the dare to climb into thin air
In the wind they spiraled
toward the sun
was I the only one to see?
I saw a flock of wayward souls
gather round a fire
to stare into the flames
rekindle their desire to live another day to try to find their way back
to who they truly are
they fell so far
they’ve forgotten they are stars
filled with light beautiful and bright. Heavenly embers
burning through the night
I saw the entire human race
burying their faces in their hands
to give commands to
the mega -metallic mind.
They couldn’t see that they were blind in their eyes a different kind of luminescent glow
all they ever needed to know
was right at their finger tips
still the answer slips in between
lost on the deep blue screen
they gave their lives to
the machine, the machine.
I saw a flock of birds decorate the sky
